Developmental Skills Classes

Many CCV students need to start with developmental skills courses to help them learn new skills, brush-up on existing skills, and prepare for college-level work. Based on the results of skills assessments, you could be recommended for Basic Writing I or II, Basic Reading, Foundations of Reading & Writing, Basic Math, or Basic Algebra.

How Do They Work?

These three-credit pre-college classes bear academic credit, and credits earned from these courses count when computing credits for satisfactory academic progress, financial aid, and veterans’ benefits. However, credits earned in these classes do not count toward an associate degree; they are at a pre-college level.

Basic skills courses are graded ONLY on a P/NP (pass/no pass) basis. To move beyond a basic skills level course, a student must do at least one of the following:

  • successfully complete a recommended basic skills course;
  • re-take the basic skills assessment(s) and achieve a satisfactory score;
    OR
  • obtain a course-by-course approval by a coordinator of academic services.

Developmental Skills Workshops

CCV offers free developmental skills workshops to students who are enrolled in any courses during that semester. These usually meet once for three or four hours. Topics may include: Grammar and Usage Review, Building Math Confidence, Classroom Discussion Skills, Marketing Your Job Skills, English as a Second Language, Library Skills and Resources, and more. Contact your site office for a schedule of workshops or to request that a certain workshop be offered.
