Applying for an F-1 Student Visa

For students not in the United States

Apply at your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. To find the latest information on what you will need to do before applying and what to take with you, consult the following U.S. Department of State web sites:

For Canadian citizens

For citizens of all other countries:

For applicants already in the United States

Apply to the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS, formerly known as Immigration and Naturalization Services, INS). You will need:

  • An I-20 form issued by CCV
  • An I-539 form, available on the web at http://www.uscis.gov
  • The required fee stated on the I-539
  • An I-901 form, available on the web at http://www.fmjfee.com
  • The required fee stated on the I-901
  • A copy of form I-94, the form issued at port of entry when you first entered the U.S.

If you are already living in Vermont, these materials should be sent to BCIS at 64 Grice Brook Road, St. Albans, VT 05478. For those in other U.S. locations, contact the BCIS for submission address.
