Skills Assessments

Why take assessments?

CCV has an open admissions policy: anyone who can contribute to and gain from post-secondary education may register for courses. The purpose of our skill assessments is to place you in the classes most appropriate to your academic abilities.

CCV uses the College Board's Accuplacer assessments. You will take sentence skills, reading comprehension, arithmetic and sometimes elementary algebra assessments, and the resulting scores help you and your advisor choose classes at the most appropriate level. In some cases SAT/ACT scored can be accepted in lieu of assessments. Contact a local advisor to have scores reviewed.

Non-degree applicants may also have the assessments waived by an advisor if unofficial transcripts of previous college courses demonstrate background necessary for their chosen CCV courses. Applicants who already have a college degree will have the assessments waived automatically in the admissions process.

You will not be denied admission to CCV based on your assessment scores; however, you may need to enroll in developmental skills courses before taking college-level classes.

How does it work?

These online assessments are administered individually to students free of charge, at your own pace, at all CCV site offices. It's a good idea to call ahead, although several CCV locations offer them on a walk-in basis.

New students at CCV in Burlington should attend an admissions appointment in order to take the assessments. To view the upcoming schedule and to register for an appointment, click here.
