Seminar in Educational Inquiry

The Seminar in Educational Inquiry (S.E.I.) is a course required of all students seeking the associate degree. It is designed to do two things:

• offer students a meaningful learning experience that integrates, synthesizes, and expands the learning gained through their coursework; and

• provide a setting in which the College can assess the academic skill levels of its graduating students.

The course uses readings, writing exercises, film, and class discussion to promote self-reflection, meta-cognitive processes, and the principles of effective learning and knowing. Some basic questions provide a framework for learning in the seminar:

• How do I know who I am?
• How do I know what I know?
• What is really important?
• What is a good idea?
• What can we learn from the past?
• And what will the future be like?

Students complete a significant research or creative project as a requirement for this course.
