Each of us has a special gift awaiting our discovery.

The Evelyn Hoffman Donovan Learning Center is located on the second floor of CCV’s Winooski Academic Center. It was named by VSC Chancellor Tim Donovan and his family in memory of their mother.

Donovan family stories reveal the touching connection between Evelyn and the center. Evelyn Hoffman Donovan (1923 – 1998) was the kind of woman who would notice the quiet reticent child in any room and reach out to engage that child. She had a way of helping young people understand their own unique and special gifts. Today, hundreds of CCV students receive extra help in the center every week.

- The center has 12 trained tutors on staff a total of 52 hours per week, with 2-3 tutors on at a time.
- 4 math lab faculty who staff 18 hours of math labs per week; 2 hours of which are volunteer.
- 4 writing lab faculty who staff 9.5 hours of writing labs, or 19 sessions, per week.

Students come to the center for many reasons.

Recent Activity in the Evelyn Hoffman Donovan Learning Center includes 5 tutors who will have made center presentations or offered in-class services to 4 CCV classes this term. At the beginning of each term, New Student Orientations and sections from Foundations, Introduction to Reading and Writing, Dimensions, and Basic Math regularly tour the center and hear about our services.

We offer:
- Community. Here they find a safe, non-judgmental, learning environment.
- Proficiency. Students develop proficiency in key academic, study and life skills.
- Transformation. Students develop critical skills, including confidence, accountability, persistence and self-advocacy.

The center also provides opportunity for students to work as peer tutors.

We have several new peer tutors, Mulu Lubula, a CCV grad, currently a grad student at UVM, who is running an ELL study group on Mondays from 10am-12pm, and Courtney Quinlan. Courtney is taking a term off, was recently accepted to Smith College and volunteers 2 hours a week.

Matthew Croto is a real standout at the Evelyn Hoffman Donovan Learning Center. Matt has worked 20 hours a week since the beginning of the Fall 2010 term. With strong academic skills, natural abilities in leadership and coaching, and a keen interest in the Learning Center’s mission and purposes, he quickly rose to the top of the hiring pool. Matt engaged enthusiastically in a tutor training process that taught to developing student skill, confidence and independence.

Matt's final day at the center will be April 30th, as he is about to graduate. He has been accepted to Champlain College and will begin work on his bachelor program in Computer Forensics and Digital Investigations.
