Emergency Management (A.S.)


This degree program will be offered beginning in fall '09. The Emergency Management program will prepare you to respond to and to be effective leaders before, during, and after any local, statewide, or national emergency. In this program, you will develop skills in leadership, emergency planning, critical decision-making and problem-solving, effective communication, and the management of community resources to effectively respond to emergencies and disasters.

Program Outcomes

Successful graduates will be able to:

  • implement principles and best practices in incident management;
  • develop plans and procedures for dealing with various emergency situations including personnel and financial management;
  • assess various emergency situations and apply the proper safety procedures for oneself and the public at large;
  • explain the impact of natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other Vermont State Police factors as they apply to emergency incidents;
  • describe procedures and protocol for search and rescue operations;
  • collaborate and communicate procedures effectively to mitigate emergency situations with first responder colleagues;
  • complete certifications in NIMS (National Incident Management System) 100, 200, and 800;
  • demonstrate leadership and provide effective public communication in a crisis;
  • employ critical thinking and problem-solving techniques relevant to emergency situations;
  • complete AEM (Associate Emergency Manager) certification;
  • identify their career and transfer options and assume a professional role in the workplace.

All courses are 3 credits unless noted otherwise.

*You may use a course to meet both a program requirement and a general education requirement, however, you may not use a single course to meet two general education requirements.

General Education Requirements

In addition to the program-specific courses listed above, an associate's degree includes completion of general education program requirements, which together must constitute a minimum of 60 credits.

Earn Credit for Experience

CCV offers an assessment program for students who have gained college-level learning through professional experience, community involvement, or self-study. Interested students enroll in the 3-credit Assessment of Prior Learning course at CCV to prepare a portfolio that describes and documents such learning. Portfolios are assessed by college faculty and college credits are awarded. These credits can be transferred to CCV, helping students accelerate degree completion.
