Darlene Murphy, Program Manager for Science and Allied Health

The chair of PMC this year is the program manager for science and allied health, Darlene Murphy. Darlene has a BS in Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising from Virginia Tech, a Master’s of Education from UVM, and is a certified athletic trainer and a certified wellness coach. Darlene started at CCV in 2003 taking on what was a new position for CCV, Coordinator of Academic Services for Allied Health Programs. As of summer 2008, Darlene's position has expanded to Director of Allied Health Programs.

A considerate and thoughtful communicator and creative thinker, Darlene is an idea person who enjoys the process piece, too. “One of the things I enjoy the most is collaborating with a health care provider to develop a new program or a revision to an existing program, then working with CCV liaisons to tailor the employers’ needs to the demographics of our students,” she says, “I love the idea of, five years or so from now, looking at a CCV catalog and seeing an entire section of programs devoted to allied health careers. Nothing would be more rewarding than having employers, other colleges in Vermont, and students consider CCV as instrumental in fostering Vermont’s healthcare workforce.”

Under Darlene’s leadership, the health career offerings at CCV have grown to five career certificate programs, two associate degree programs and a third currently under development. The certificate programs include: Allied Health Prep, Clinical Lab Assistant, Healthcare Office Assistant, Massage Therapy and Bodywork, and Medical Assisting. Associate of Applied Science degrees are available in Massage Therapy and Bodywork and Vision Care Technology. Pending system approval, a new Clinical Lab Science degree is under development that will articulate into the Clinical Lab Assistant program and educate students to work as Clinical Lab Technicians in hospitals and healthcare labs.
