Applying to CollegesQ. The application asks for SAT or ACT scores. What does that mean? Most colleges require that traditional-aged students take these standardized tests. Because you are a transfer student and have proven that you can do college-level work, it’s often the case that this requirement is waived. Check with the school to find out if you are required to take these tests. Q. The school wants an essay. Help!First of all, relax. The school wants to know how you express your ideas and to see that your writing skills are college-level. Write a draft of the essay and have your English teacher, writing lab mentor, or a fellow student look it over. Content and appearance are important, so revise your draft before printing, and check it carefully. Q. I’ve been asked to indicate a major on the application, but I’m not sure what to say.At CCV you may have taken a number of liberal arts courses, but you may still not be sure what your major will be at a four-year school. On your application indicate that you are “undecided,” but be prepared to discuss, in your application essay or an interview, what areas you are considering. Q. The school asks for recommendations. What do I do?Your “new” school wants to get a picture of you from someone who knows your work well, so your advisor and/or faculty are usually excellent choices. Give them ample time and provide them with any necessary forms and a stamped envelope addressed to the college. Although the person writing your recommendation may not want to use the form, ask them to read it carefully, sign the form and attach it to the letter of recommendation. Many transfer applications ask for a dean’s recommendation; ask your local coordinator to complete this form. Q. How do I apply for financial aid?Call the financial aid office and request application forms. Pay close attention to deadlines, as both federal and local sources of aid have strict timelines. It is important to beat—not just meet—financial aid application deadlines. Some institutions will enroll financial aid transfer students during only one semester! Eligibility will be based on many factors, including your grades (in some cases), your financial situation, the college’s policies, and other criteria. |
