Community College of Vermont Previews: An e-Newsletter for Future CCV Students

Instructor Mary Findley

Interested in literature? If so, do consider taking a class with one of CCV’s most popular instructors, Mary Findley, who teaches both online and “on-the-ground.” In addition to Introduction to Literature and Introduction to Journalism, she also teaches The Literature of New England and The Vampire in Literature, Culture & Film.

Mary’s students praise her warm communication style, whether she’s responding online or in the classroom. As CCV Coordinator Tori Matthew says, “Mary’s passion for literature, her varied assignments, discussions and small group projects capture students’ imaginations and keep them engaged throughout the semester.”

Mary uses the online environment to the fullest, assigning interactive web links and other online resources as homework, holding lively discussions, even breaking a class into small groups for creative assignments. “She responded to every single student posting in our 12-week literature class with the most enthusiastic, energetic and supportive comments,” says Susan Henry, who took Findley’s Literature of New England course. “Yet the class wasn’t all online learning; for example, Mary assigned a walk in the woods during our reading of Thoreau’s Walden.”

A published writer currently working on her doctorate, Findley brings to her teaching a rich background in professional writing, from academic papers to beat reporting and editing for a number of periodicals. Also a Vermont Technical College instructor, she holds a B.A. in English from Southern Vermont College, and an M.A. in English and writing from Vermont College at Norwich University, with a focus on Gothic literature and its interconnectedness to popular culture. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Literary and Popular Culture Studies from Union Institute and University. In her doctoral program, Findley is continuing to study horror's manifestation in popular culture and how it reflects societal fears and anxieties.

Mary will be teaching Introduction to Literature and the Vampire course online this spring.
