Fall 13: Study Abroad in Belize, Current Environmental Issues, ENV-1230

Experience intriguing, dynamic and diverse ecosystems as you explore Belize’s barrier reef and tropical rain forest. Students enrolled in this Current Environmental Issues course section will have an amazing opportunity to see, first- hand, the impacts of humans on our environment, and the kinds of research and policies that are being developed in response to these impacts. Belize’s coral reefs and stunning coastal mangrove estuaries will be our classroom as we explore areas of current environmental concern.

  1. Stay 4 nights on South Water Caye, a small private island in the Caribbean covered with coconut palms, tropical flowers, and white sands. Go snorkeling in the crystal clear warm water that holds an abundance of fish and coral. The Belize Barrier Reef has been named by U.N.E.S.C.O. as a “World Heritage Site” and the waters surrounding the South Water Caye are a marine reserve.
  2. Students may opt to do one overnight home stay with a family from the village of Blue Creek. Take part in the day-to-day rhythms of Belizean lifestyle of Kekchi or Mopan Maya culture. Observe and participate in making the day’s tortillas, and listen to Mayan music by firelight in a thatched hut.
  3. Embark on hikes through Belize’s rainforests, a nature lover’s paradise with lush rainforest jungles teeming with animal and plant life.
  4. Visit the classic Mayan ruins at Lubantuun, the place of the Fallen Stones. This archeological site has 11 major structures grouped around five main plazas.
  5. Visit the Smithsonian Research Station on Carrie Boy Caye. Research scientists from all over the world use this station and will be sharing their expertise.
