Study Abroad

Study abroad with CCV and earn credit while experiencing other countries and cultures. With a class size limit of 18, you can expect the same student-centered learning experience you have in your other CCV courses.

Study abroad courses include an eight to ten-day study trip, led by an instructor and a CCV staff member. Course fees can be covered by financial aid or through CCV's payment plan.

Social Problems (SOC-1030)
Current social problems will be studied including poverty, population, substance abuse, crime, urban and rural issues, and family and community problems. Attention will be given to the current state of social institutions and the nature of social change while exploring how social problems are defined and perceived by various groups as matters of public and global concern. This course will integrate many social themes and will critically analyze attempts to resolve problems using the methodologies of social science and a range of theoretical perspectives.

Highlights

  • Visit historic Old Town Albuquerque.
  • Visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.
  • Engage in community service, and learn, firsthand, about the needs and social problems of border communities.
  • Explore the challenges faced by immigrant and border communities.
  • Explore the local art and music scene.

The course fee is $1485 and includes a 9-day study tour in New Mexico, including group flight to and from Burlington; seven breakfasts, six lunches and three dinners; lodging; transportation, museum entry fees and guest lecturer fees. Financial aid and/or the payment plan can be applied to the fee. Course tuition is separate.

Faculty: Mica DeAngelis is a Coordinator of Academic Services in the Winooski Academic Center. Barry Mansfield is a retired UVM college administrator and teacher. They taught Social Problems as a Study Away and Service Learning class in the spring of 2009 in New Orleans. Mica and Barry have travelled extensively in New Mexico where they built homes with Habitat for Humanity. They are looking forward to introducing CCV students to the rich culture of the Southwest and working together on a service learning project in Las Cruces while learning about the problems border communities face.

Since 2002, CCV has taken students to Greece, England, Ireland, Mexico, Italy, France, Belize and Costa Rica on 10-day study trips in courses ranging from Art Appreciation to Ornithology.
