Spring Study Abroad Trip to Italy

The Stories in the Stone of Italy and Vermont. This course considered the unique contributions made by Italian immigrants to the granite and marble industries of Vermont, particularly in Barre and Proctor. The study tour focused on towns and cities in Tuscany and Lombardy. Students visited Milan and the Lakes region of Lombardy, areas of rich artistic heritage and natural beauty, as well as home to many of the artists and activists who immigrated to Vermont and had such a dramatic impact upon the stone working industry here.

The tour included:

  • Group flight out of Boston
  • Visit to Milan’s Duomo, Da Vinci Museum, cemetery
  • Visit to Michelangelo’s home
  • Meetings with Italian history and art scholars
  • Tour of Siena Cathedral and other Renaissance masterpieces
  • Pre- and post-course meetings in Barre and Montpelier

Instructor Nicole Librandi has lived and traveled extensively in Italy, the country of her heritage. In addition to a master’s degree in Italian from Middlebury College, Nicole holds a M.A. in Romance Studies from Cornell University. She has taught Italian at all levels for 10 years, most recently as a CCV instructor.
