Study Abroad in Ireland

May 9 - 18 Ireland through Words, Images and Music (HUM-2710)

This class explored the history, literature, film, and music of the Emerald Isle. During the trip to Ireland, they visited the rugged land and seascapes of Connemara and Mayo, the lush remoteness of West Kerry and Cork, and the bustling capital city, Dublin.

Highlights Included:

  • Visits to Irish castles, abbeys, writers’ homes, and ancient megalithic monuments
  • Time to see key historic features, such as the Hill of Tara, and the Book of Kells
  • Day trip to Clare Island in Clew Bay and to the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher
  • Evenings of local traditional music, dramatic performances, and a literary pub crawl
  • Seminars on topical issues with Irish university scholars

Instructor

Lesli O’Dowd has taught at CCV for many years in the social sciences and humanities and is a Coordinator of Academic Services at CCV Upper Valley. She originally went to Ireland to conduct her doctoral research in cultural anthropology and remained there for 17 years, working as a university lecturer, environmental activist, and journalist, before relocating to Vermont.
