New Orleans Study AwayMay 2009Unlike previous study abroad courses, this spring offering presented a unique opportunity to provide community service work in our own country. Social Problems (SOC-1030) brought students to the New Orleans area, where they not only experienced the culture and beauty of the city, but also learned about social problems there and provided 30 hours of hands-on community service. The work sites were determined by the needs of the local community, and students were required to be in good physical condition, culturally sensitive, and willing to work hard. The course was taught by Burlington Coordinator Mica DeAngelis and long-time teacher Barry Mansfield. They have been to the Gulf area four times since Hurricane Katrina, working with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild homes. | ||
